Of all the skills a paddler can develop on moving water, few are as elegantly useful as the ferry. Whether you're in a tandem canoe loaded for a week-long wilderness trip, a solo whitewater kayak bobbing above a rapid, or a sea kayak crossing a tidal race, the ferry is the technique that allows you to move laterally across a current without being swept downstream. It is, without exaggeration, one of the defining maneuvers of river paddling, and mastering it separates paddlers who merely survive moving water from those who truly navigate it.
This article explores the ferry in depth: what it is, why it matters, the physics that make it work, and the step-by-step mechanics of performing both front ferries and back ferries in canoes and kayaks. By the end, you should have a thorough understanding not just of how to execute the maneuver, but of when and why to reach for it on the river.
What Is a Ferry?
A ferry is a paddling maneuver used to move a boat laterally across a current—from one side of a river, or from one feature to another—without losing significant ground downstream. The term is borrowed from the historical practice of river ferries, boats that crossed rivers by angling against the current and using its force to push them across, often with the aid of a cable strung from shore to shore.
The modern paddling ferry works on exactly the same principle. By angling the boat relative to the current and applying forward or backward propulsion, the paddler uses the river's own energy to move their craft across it. The genius of the ferry is that it doesn't fight the current directly; it negotiates with it, redirecting the current's force into lateral movement.
There are two primary types of ferries: the front ferry (sometimes called an upstream ferry or forward ferry) and the back ferry (also called a reverse ferry or downstream ferry). Both accomplish the same end—moving the boat laterally across the current—but they do so in different orientations and serve different tactical purposes.
The Front Ferry Defined
A front ferry is performed with the bow of the boat pointed upstream. The paddler angles the boat so that the bow is tilted or aimed toward the destination shore (rather than pointing straight into the current) and then paddles forward. The current pushes against the upstream-facing hull, and the angle of the boat redirects that pressure into lateral movement across the river.
In a front ferry, you are essentially paddling forward against the current but moving at an angle. If your angle and paddling effort are matched correctly to the speed of the current, your boat holds its position on the river (not drifting downstream or moving upstream) while slipping sideways toward your destination.
The Back Ferry Defined
A back ferry, by contrast, is performed with the bow pointing downstream—essentially your normal downstream orientation. Instead of turning the boat around, you back-paddle, using reverse strokes to slow the boat down relative to the current. By angling the stern slightly toward the destination or target shore and back-paddling, you create the same physical effect: the current pushes against the hull at an angle, and the boat moves laterally.
The back ferry is particularly valuable because it allows you to maintain your downstream-facing position—keeping your eyes on what's ahead—while still moving laterally to avoid obstacles or reposition for upcoming features.

Why the Ferry Matters
Before diving into technique, it's worth understanding why this maneuver is so central to river paddling. The ferry isn't just one tool among many; it's arguably the most versatile and frequently used positioning technique on moving water.
Crossing the river. The most obvious use: you need to get from one side to the other. On slow-moving water this might seem trivial, but on any current of consequence, paddling straight across means you'll end up significantly downstream of where you started. A ferry lets you cross with minimal downstream drift, which matters when the opposite shore features a desired eddy, a portage trail, a campsite, or simply the only safe landing before a rapid.
Avoiding obstacles. A rock appears in the current ahead. A strainer (a fallen tree) blocks part of the channel. A hydraulic or hole looms downstream. In each case, you need to move laterally to a cleaner line. The ferry, especially the back ferry, is your primary tool for this kind of mid-current repositioning.
Setting up for rapids and features. Reading whitewater involves identifying the cleanest path through a rapid, often called the "line." Rarely does the line run straight down the middle. It might require you to enter river-left, cross to river-right halfway down, and exit center. Ferrying between these positions is how you actually execute the line you've read.
Eddy-to-eddy travel. Experienced river paddlers navigate rapids by moving from eddy to eddy—calm pockets behind rocks or obstructions where the current reverses or slows. Exiting one eddy, crossing the current, and catching the next eddy on the opposite side is often accomplished with a ferry (combined with eddy turns, which are closely related).
Safety and rescue. When a paddler is in trouble—swimming in the current, pinned on a rock, or drifting toward danger—rescuers need to position themselves precisely in moving water. The ferry is the foundational skill for any mid-current rescue positioning.
Scouting and decision-making. Sometimes you need to pause mid-river to look downstream at what's coming, or to adjust your plan. A well-executed ferry can let you essentially hover in place while you read the water ahead.
In short: if you paddle moving water and you can't ferry, you are at the mercy of the current. If you can ferry well, you are its partner.
The Physics: Why Ferries Work
A brief detour into the mechanics helps clarify the technique. Imagine a current flowing downstream at, say, three miles per hour. If you point your boat straight upstream and paddle forward at three miles per hour, you stay stationary relative to the shore. If you paddle faster, you move upstream; slower, and you drift down.
Now angle the boat slightly—say, 30 degrees off the upstream line, with the bow tilted toward the left shore. When you paddle forward, your thrust has two components: one pushing against the current (upstream) and one pushing you toward the left shore. If your upstream stroke matches the current's speed, you don't drift downstream. Meanwhile, the lateral component, the current pushing on the hull, moves you steadily across the river.
The back ferry operates on the same principle, just inverted. You're facing downstream with the current, moving faster than you'd like. Back-paddling slows you relative to the current and angling the boat redirects some of that differential into lateral movement.
Two variables, then, govern every ferry: the angle of the boat relative to the current, and the speed of the current relative to the boat. Get these right and the ferry feels almost magical—the river does the work of pushing you across. Get them wrong and you'll either get swept downstream or spun out of your angle entirely.
Reading the Current Before You Ferry
No ferry succeeds without first understanding the water you're about to ferry across. Before committing, train yourself to observe:
The current's speed and direction—not just the main flow but any variations. Eddies and eddy lines will affect your ferry at entry and exit. Boils, pillows, and pressure waves indicate underwater features that can disrupt your angle. Downstream hazards define your consequences if the ferry fails; a ferry with a clean runout is very different from one with a drop downriver.
Also note where the current is fastest. In most rivers, the main flow—the "tongue"—runs in a V pattern, faster in the center and slower near the banks where friction slows the water. Your ferry angle will need to adjust as you cross these zones. A common mistake is setting a good angle in slow water near shore, then getting spun out when you hit the fast main current and fail to adjust.

The Front Ferry: Step-by-Step
The front ferry is typically the first ferry taught, partly because facing upstream provides a clear view of the current you're working with, and partly because forward paddling is stronger and more controllable than back-paddling for most people.
Step 1: Start from an eddy or slow water. Position yourself in an eddy on one side of the river, with your bow pointed upstream. If you're not in an eddy, at least establish control in relatively calm water before initiating the ferry.
Step 2: Identify your destination. Look across the river to where you want to end up. This might be another eddy, a landing spot, or simply a tree along the shore. Pick a specific visual target, not just "the other side."
Step 3: Set your angle. As you leave the eddy and cross the eddy line into the main current, your boat needs to be angled appropriately. The general guideline is to aim your bow about 30 to 45 degrees off the upstream line. In faster current, use a smaller angle (closer to straight upstream, perhaps 20 degrees) because the current will grab your hull harder. In slower current, you can open the angle up more (45 degrees or more) since you'll need more lateral push. Think of it this way: fast water punishes big angles by spinning you out and sending you downstream; slow water rewards bigger angles with quicker crossings.
Step 4: Cross the eddy line with momentum and commitment. Eddy lines are where many ferries fail. The water on the eddy side is moving in one direction (often upstream, back toward the top of the eddy), while the main current is moving downstream. This shear can grab your bow and spin you. Cross the eddy line with firm forward strokes and a committed angle, and be ready for the boat to want to turn downstream as the current grabs the bow.
Step 5: Be ready to lean the boat appropriately. This is critical and often underemphasized. When the downstream current hits your upstream-side hull, it may want to flip you upstream (pushing water up and over the upstream gunwale, potentially swamping a canoe or flipping a kayak). To counter this, edge or lean your boat downstream—that is, tilt it slightly toward the direction the current is flowing. In a kayak, this means lifting the upstream knee and dropping the downstream hip. In a canoe, lean your body (or in a solo canoe, tilt the hull) downstream while keeping your head centered over the water for balance. This downstream lean presents the hull's bottom to the current rather than its side, allowing the water to flow cleanly underneath.
Step 6: Paddle forward with steady, strong strokes. Use solid forward strokes to maintain upstream momentum. If you're in a kayak, paddle both sides with good rotation. If you're in a solo canoe, forward strokes with occasional correction (such as J-strokes, pries, or stern draws) keep you on angle. In a tandem canoe, the bow paddler provides forward power and can apply draws and pries to place the bow while the stern paddler manages power and angle through steering strokes.
Step 7: Adjust angle continuously. As you move across the river, conditions change. You may need to open the angle up to move faster across the river, or close it down if you're drifting downstream. If you're losing ground (moving downstream), close the angle—point more directly upstream—and paddle harder. If you're making good lateral progress, you can often open the angle slightly to speed the crossing. This constant adjustment is the heart of ferrying well.
Step 8: Plan your arrival. As you approach the far side, anticipate the eddy or landing you're aiming for. Crossing into the destination eddy is another eddy-line transition, and again the current differential can spin you. Often, you'll want to open your angle as you approach the eddy so the bow swings into the eddy water, or you'll carve into the eddy with a tilted edge, similar to an eddy turn.
Step 9: Settle into position. Once across, take a breath, assess, and plan your next move.
The Back Ferry: Step-by-Step
The back ferry requires more coordination than the front ferry because back-paddling is mechanically weaker and less instinctive for most paddlers. But once mastered, it's extraordinarily useful because it preserves your downstream orientation—you keep seeing what's coming.
Step 1: Recognize the situation. Back ferries are typically used mid-rapid or mid-current, when you're already moving downstream and need to move laterally without turning the boat upstream. You spot a rock ahead, or you realize you need to be more river-left before the next drop, and there's no time (or no benefit) to spinning the boat around.
Step 2: Set your angle. Here's where the back ferry differs crucially from the front ferry. In a front ferry, you angle the bow toward your destination. In a back ferry, you angle the stern toward your destination—which means the bow points away from where you want to go. If you want to move to river-right, the bow tilts toward river-left, and the stern tilts toward river-right. This can feel counterintuitive, so pause and visualize it: the current pushes on the hull, and the angled stern deflects the boat in the direction the stern is pointing.
The angle should be modest—typically 15 to 30 degrees off the downstream line, less than you'd use in a front ferry. The current's force is substantial, and too much angle will spin the boat sideways (broaching) rather than sliding it.
Step 3: Begin back-paddling. Apply reverse strokes to slow the boat relative to the current. In a kayak, this is a reverse stroke on each side, rotating your torso and pushing the blade from hip to knee. In a canoe, reverse strokes or back strokes work on whichever side you're paddling. Ideally both paddlers work together to manage correction. Power matters here—weak back strokes won't slow the boat enough to create the differential the ferry needs.
Step 4: Maintain your angle. The current constantly tries to align the boat with the flow (bow downstream, stern upstream—your starting orientation) or to spin it past that and turn you backwards. Small corrective strokes keep the angle stable. A back sweep on one side or a reverse draw can help hold the angle while you continue providing power.
Step 5: Lean downstream—again. The same principle applies: the current is hitting your hull at an angle, and you need to present the bottom of the boat to it, not the side. Tilt the boat downstream (toward the direction the current is flowing) to avoid catching an edge and flipping.
Step 6: Watch your progress and adjust. Because you're facing downstream, you can easily see where you're going and what's coming. Use this to your advantage. If the hazard you're avoiding is getting closer, you either need a steeper angle or more back-paddling. If you're overshooting your target line, ease off.
Step 7: End the ferry cleanly. Once you've moved to the lateral position you want, straighten the boat (align it with the current) and resume forward progress, or continue back-paddling if you need to slow your descent further.
Tandem Canoe Considerations
Ferrying in a tandem canoe adds coordination demands but should also give you more power. The key is clear communication and division of labor.
In a front ferry, the bow paddler typically provides primary forward power and can make adjustments to the angle with bow draws or cross-bow draws. The stern paddler provides power plus and often primary steering—usually through a combination of forward strokes and corrective strokes like J-strokes, stern draws, or stern pries. The stern paddler is generally responsible for establishing and maintaining the ferry angle, since the stern's position relative to the current largely dictates the boat's orientation.
In a back ferry, the roles partially invert. Both paddlers are now back-paddling, but the bow paddler—now at the "trailing" end from the current's perspective (since the current is hitting the stern first)—uses back strokes and occasional back draws or pries to manage the angle. The stern paddler provides power with back strokes.
Talking through the plan before committing helps enormously. "We're ferrying to that eddy river-right, I'll set the angle, we'll paddle hard" takes five seconds and prevents the silent miscommunication that causes so many canoe swims.
Solo Canoe Considerations
Solo canoeists carry the entire burden of power and steering. Most solo paddlers use correction strokes (J-strokes, Canadian strokes, pitches) to keep the boat on angle while paddling forward. In faster current, you may find that a strong forward stroke on the current side is enough to hold the boat's angle without explicit correction, because the current pressure on the hull is doing much of the alignment work. Read the boat and adjust as needed.
Heeling the canoe—tilting it deliberately with your knees or hips—is especially powerful in solo canoes. A pronounced downstream heel in a ferry both sheds current from the hull and carves the boat away from the direction of the lean. Effectively, you submerge more of the right side's curve while the left edge lifts and creates the "rocker" which acts as a pivot point. The water resistance pushes the bow to the right, causing the boat to carve in that direction.
Kayak Considerations
Kayaks are nimble and responsive, making ferries relatively easy once you've got the balance of angle and paddling sorted. The key kayak-specific points:
Edge control matters enormously. Kayaks have narrower hulls than canoes, and catching an upstream edge in moving water can flip you much faster. Practice holding your edges on calm moving water before committing to consequential ferries.
Torso rotation powers your strokes. Both forward and reverse strokes in ferries should engage your core, not just your arms. You'll tire quickly trying to power a ferry with arms alone.
Sea kayaks, whitewater kayaks, and recreational kayaks handle differently. Long sea kayaks track strongly and resist turning, which actually helps them hold a ferry angle once set but makes the initial angle harder to establish. Shorter whitewater kayaks spin easily, which makes angle adjustments fast but also makes it easy to lose the angle if you're not attentive.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Drifting downstream during the ferry. This usually means your angle is too open (too close to perpendicular to the current). Close the angle—point the bow more directly upstream (in a front ferry) or reduce your angle so the bow is pointed more directly downstream (in a back ferry)—and paddle harder.
Getting spun out. Several things can lead to a spin out. The simplest is over-paddling on one side. Balance your strokes and monitor your angle. Don’t allow your bow or stern angle become too extreme. Once the current grabs you and starts you into a spin you will likely need to give up ground, or allow yourself to move downstream, in order to regain control.
Flipping upstream. Nearly always caused by leaning the wrong way (upstream) or not leaning at all. The current catches the upstream edge and levers the boat over. Drill the downstream lean until it's automatic. Always remember to present the bottom of your boat to the moving water.
Making no lateral progress. Your angle is too closed (too straight upstream). Open it up—let the bow tilt more toward the destination—and keep paddling.
Overshooting or undershooting the target eddy. Start by aiming upstream of your target eddy; it's almost always easier to drift down into an eddy or to a target than to claw upstream back to one you've passed.
Practicing the Ferry
Ferries are learned by doing, and the best practice happens on moving water with clear runouts and recoverable consequences. Find a section of river with a consistent, moderate current and nothing dangerous immediately downstream. Practice front ferries back and forth until they feel automatic, then work on back ferries. Play with different angles and currents. Try ferries in progressively faster water as your confidence grows.
On most Iowa rivers you’ll be hard pressed to find locations where the flow is strong enough to flip your canoe or kayak if don’t lean correctly when crossing a current or playing in an eddy. That being said, it’s a good thing to be aware of and practice correctly so you’ll be ready when you actually find those places or go somewhere with a stronger current..
Working with an experienced paddler or taking a class from a certified instructor accelerates this process enormously. They'll see the small errors in your angle, lean, and stroke that you can't feel from inside the boat.
