Speaker Bios

Spencer Bauer

Spencer has been fishing since they day he could walk, plowing his way on the shore of small streams and ponds in southern Iowa.  As he grew older he had the opportunity to fish for a variety of species across the continent, eventually leading him to kayak fishing. He’s been an avid kayak angler for the last decade.  Big fish have always held a place near and dear in his heart, and kayak fishing has opened the doors to fishing experiences he would never have had otherwise.  

Kevin Beatty

Kevin is a chemist at 3M in Knoxville and is blessed to live within 20 minutes of Lake Red Rock. Over the last five years or so, he has made himself a regular fixture at the lake. If you don’t find him there on a given weekend it’s likely he is enjoying the company of fellow paddlers on some other body of water. Some of his favorite paddling spots include the North Shore and Apostle Islands of Lake Superior, Voyageurs National Park, the Mississippi River, and Tybee Island in Georgia.

Doug Breyfogle

Doug has been paddling canoes and kayaks all over the Unted States for more than twenty-five years. He’s a Level 2 ACA Certified Kayak Instructor and has been a Boy Scout leader for many years. He’s led numerous trips into the wilderness including canoeing trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and two week backpacking trips to Philmont Scout Ranch.

Steve Campbell

Steve is an Assistant Director of outdoor Recreation and Education with the Recreational Services department at the University of Iowa. In this role, he is the Departmental Executive Officer for the Lifetime Leisure Skills (LLS) academic department, which offers credit-granting classes in outdoor recreation and leadership, martial arts, dance, and sports & exercise. Prior to holding this position he was the Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs at TCU (2009-2014), Graduate Assistant of Outdoor Recreation at Texas State University (2007-2009), and a sea kayak guide for Southeast Adventure Outfitters on Saint Simons Island, GA (2005-2007). He has earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Iowa, Master of Science in Recreation Management from Texas State University, and is a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Notable paddling trips include Boquillas Canyon of the Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River/Big Bend National Park, Brazos River, San Marcos River, Guadalupe River, Buffalo National River, Lower Mountain Fork River, South Macmillan River in Yukon Territory, Voyageurs National Park, and numerous river in Iowa.

Shireen Cave

Shireen got into paddling as a CanoeSport customer ten years ago. Since then she’s acquired a Level 3 ACA Kayak Instructor certification, a Level 2 Stand Up Paddle Board Instructor certification, and a Wilderness First Responder certification. She’s kayaked and guided in the Everglades, along the Georgia Coast, the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior, Vermillion Bay on the Louisiana Coast, and numerous Iowa rivers and lakes. Shireen has canoed in the Boundary Waters and paddled the Everglades on a stand-up paddleboard. She is a regular kayak and SUP instructor for CanoeSport Outfitters, as well as an adjunct kayak and SUP instructor for the University of Iowa. She has a passion for running, and has completed numerous ultra marathons.

Annette Casad

Annette lives in Davenport, Iowa near the Mississippi River. She grew up with a love of travel and all things outdoors, especially trout fishing and any activities connected to water. In 2016 Annette bought her first kayak from CanoeSport Outfitters and hasn’t looked back. She enjoys going on kayak adventures, exploring new waterways, and capturing cool photos along the way. She will be presenting with Marlyn Hoksbergen on a recent trip to beautiful northern Michigan.

Tyler Cole

Tyler is from Eastern Iowa, where he is the streets superintendent for the city of Hopkinton, IA. Tyler leads by example when it comes to dedication, sportsmanship and catching trophy bass from a kayak.  He’s a 2-time KBF National Qualifier, was the 2017 & 2019 Iowa Kayak Angler of the year, the 2017 YAK-IT Tournament of Champions winner, and a 2018 Hobie Worlds 7 Competitor with a 26th place finish. Tyler is sponsored by Mossy Oak Fishing, Mainstream Tackle and Outdoors, and Hawkeye Custom Fishing Rods among others. In the past he has been the Tournament Director for Iowa Kayak Anglers  and Tournament Director for Midwest Kayak Fishing Series and is currently BASS Open Series Director .

Jessica Diehl

Jessica Diehl is a Manufacturers Rep for Wilderness Systems, Perception, and Dagger Kayaks, along with Boardworks SUP.  She is an active recreational paddler and spends most of her time on lakes and rivers around the mid-west.  She enjoys taking her dogs out any chance she gets and SUP Yoga (but not together). 

Vern Fish

Vern is the former Executive Director of the Black Hawk County Conservation Board in Waterloo, Iowa.  He has paddled all five Protected Water Areas in Iowa and has run wild rivers from the Mexican border to Hudson Bay and north to the Arctic Circle. He completed the Ontario Parks Northwest Wilderness Quest in 2018. Vern currently serves on the board of directors of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the Friends of Wabakimi. He is also the president of the Black Hawk Creek Water & Soil Coalition and co-chair of the Cedar River Watershed Coalition.

Scott Hamstra

Scott lives in Madison, Wisconsin and is a sales representatives for BIG Adventures, Astral Designs, and Pelican, Intl.

Glenn Harman

Glenn is originally from Florida and now works for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), in the IDNR River Programs. Glenn is responsible for engineering, design and construction of dam removal and river stability projects throughout the state. He’s involved in the construction of the Riverside Whitewater Park, and looks to assist in the future with the design and construction of additional whitewater features in Iowa.  Glenn became an ACA Canoe instructor in 2008 to instruct county naturalists how to lead groups down the river. Since his first ACA instructor course, Glenn has branched out into whitewater kayaking and holds a level 4 certification in kayaking, canoe and swift water rescue disciplines. Over the last several years he has become an avid whitewater paddler, logging trips throughout the country and stepping up to more advanced rivers like the Cheoah, Arkansas and Gauley. 

Marlyn Hoksbergen

Marlyn lives in Pella and is a night RN supervisor at Pella Regional Health Center. She’s also  a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo & helps teach classes at Triumph Martial Arts in Pella. She’s been kayaking for 8 years but Dutch oven cooking & camping for almost 20. She owns lots of cast including Dutch ovens, skillets & other pieces. She started out cooking stews & cobblers & has progressed to more complicated dishes which include a variety of cheesecakes. She loves cooking with friends or for larger groups and has competed in local & national Dutch Oven competitions. 

Jeff Holmes

Jeff started CanoeSport Outfitters over twenty-five years ago. He published Canoeing Iowa Magazinefrom 1989 until 1996, has been certified as a sea kayaking coach with the British Canoe Union, is currently a Level 4 ACA Coastal Sea Kayak instructor, is an adjunct instructor for the University of Iowa, and is a Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer Candidate. He’s solo kayaked the Everglades and circumnavigated the North Core Bank in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In addition, he’s kayaked the coast of Texas, Mississippi, Vancouver Island, and Georgia along with numerous trips on Lake Superior. He’s canoed the Boundary Waters and most rivers in Iowa and whitewater kayaked on the St. Louis River, Kettle River, Nahntahala River, and Green River in North Carolina.

Steve Kuhl and Pia Montoya

Steve is an American Canoe Association Level 4 Coastal Sea Kayak Instructor from Nebraska. He’s an avid paddler and has kayaked the Missouri River Recreation Area extensively. He’ll provide an overview of the MNRR with an emphasis on landmarks and points of interest.

 

Pia is originally from Columbia and started paddling over a decade ago. She is passionate about all types of kayaking and has spent significant time paddling in coastal areas as well many areas of the Midwest. Pia is an ACA certified level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor.

Torry Moore

Torry is the manufacture representative for several outdoor companies including Current Designs, We-no-nah Canoe, Big Agnes, and MTI.

Dave Oliver

David is a retired ISU biology professor who has canoed and kayaked rivers, lakes, and oceans whenever and wherever possible for over five decades. He has accumulated boats in Maine, New Your, and the Pacific Northwest as well as Iowa just in case a paddling opportunity arises. He plans on spending the next decade kayaking the Puget Sound full time.

Steve Parrish

Steve is well-known among local paddlers, having served as the editor of the Central Iowa Paddlers newsletters. He has paddled in 20 states and 4 countries, including the Everglades, Isle Royale, the Apostle Islands, and Slate Islands. He’s also a frequent paddler of Lake Red Rock and Lake Rathbun.

John Pearson

John is a level 3 ACA Coastal Kayak Instructor for Canoesport Outfitters and leads eco tours on Lake Red Rock. He has paddled the Ozarks, Okeefenokee Swamp, Isle Royale, Apostle Islands, Voyageurs National Park, Puget Sound & Salish Sea, Yellowstone Lake, the Mississippi River, the Everglades, the Texas Gulf Coast, and several places around the Great Lakes. John is a regular participant on Project Aware river clean-ups, paddling on rivers across Iowa, and serving a volunteer naturalist. He is a contributing writer to three nature books: Deep Nature: Photographs From Iowa, Iowa State Parks: A Century Of Stewardship, and The Guide To Iowa's State Preserves. For his day job, John is an ecologist for the Iowa DNR.

Jim Pease

A native of Burlington, Iowa, Jim has over 4 decades of experience as front-line interpreter, professor of interpretation, writer and consultant. He's taught in formal and non-formal settings, written publications, and communicated by statewide radio programs, TV segments, podcasts, and websites. His experience includes teaching interpretation for 24 years, research as an Extension Wildlife Specialist, director of Iowa's nature Mapping and Master Conservation programs, and fifteen years in youth development and natural resources. He's taught and conducted projects internationally and received numerous awards for his work. Now retired, he has emeritus stats in the National Resource Ecology and Management Department at ISU. He helped design and conduct the Master River Stewards Program for Iowa Rivers Revival and paddled some 2,000 miles of Iowa rivers, conducting biological and interpret surveys for the IWT program. Jim holds leadership positions with the Story County Conservation Board and Friends of Ada Hayden Heritage Park, and can be heard on Iowa Public Radio in his wildlife program "Talk of Iowa." 

Denny Ransom

A long-time fan of fishing and adventure, Denny decided to try fishing from a kayak several years ago. He was immediately hooked and has been an active kayak angler ever since. He loves to share his passion and knowledge through his brand, Float Fish Adventure on YouTube and other social media platforms. He is a prostaff member for Whisker Seeker Tackle, Wilderness Systems Fishing Kayaks, and YakGear Kayak Accessories.

Todd Robertson

Todd is the Outreach Coordinator for River Programs at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He is a certified solo/tandem canoe, Kayak, and SUP instructor with the American Canoe Association. He organizes and teaches for the Iowa DNR Canoe, Kayak, and SUP schools.

Scott Shrader

Scott is a native Iowan, is President and founder of Iowa Kayak Anglers and a Native Watercraft Pro Staff Angler. He uses his passion for kayak angling to help get others into the sport and to develop his own skills in the local kayak tournament scene. He also has a passion for the outdoors and photography and is the owner of Scott Shrader Photography. 

Rick Thompson

Rick is the manufacture rep for Eddyline Kayaks.

Piper Wall

Piper lives in Ames and paddles canoes, kayaks, and stand up paddle boards with and without 2 big dogs.  She has paddled flat water, moving water, and whitewater in various states and in Canada and Costa Rica.  She is an American Canoe Association River Canoe (Level 3) and Whitewater Kayak (Level 4) certified instructor, has taught paddling skills for a variety of groups in Iowa and beyond, and is the primary instructor for the Iowa State University Canoe Kayak club.  She is also a board member of and instructor for the Iowa Whitewater Coalition, the commissioner for the Summer Iowa Games Whitewater events, and the commissioner for the Winter Iowa Games Indoor Paddling events.

John Wenck

Water Trails Coordinator, Iowa DNR. Although and Iowa native, John didn't discover the beauty of Iowa's rivers until October 2004 when he took a short trip in a kayak on the Des Moines river north of downtown. For the past ten years, his primary role at the DNR has been to implement the water trails statewide plan by coordinating and assisting in the planning and development of water trails across the state. He also teaches paddling classes, manages the river programs GIS data, and maintains the state's interactive paddling map for the DNR: www.iowadnr/paddlingmap. He and his wife Sandy enjoy taking trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW)
