Shireen Cave. Shireen started paddling 4 years ago and started working with CSO over 2 years ago. She is ACA Coastal Kayaking Certified and has paddled in the Everglades, Lousisiana, Lake Superior, Georgia, and around Iowa’s lakes and rivers. She often leads and assists with the instructional program. She is the resident ‘expert’ on boat repairs. |
Doug Dubree. Doug is a Battalion Chief and Paramedic with teh Rock Island Fire Department. He has 33 years of being a full-time paramedic on an ambulance and 15 years of work in an emergency room. Doug also worked for 13 years as a National Ski Patroller. He was an EMT Instructor for 10 years and is currently an Ice Rescue Instructor. He was a Leave No Trace Instructor for the Boy Scouts. |
Vern Fish. Currently the Executive Director of the Black Hawk County Conservation Board, Vern is a Native Iowan with a BA and MA in Biology from the University of Northern Iowa. His backcountry experience includes climbing Cloud Peak in the Big Horns, hiking the canyons of Escalante, paddling the Buffalo and Allagash Rivers, Sea Kayaking the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas, and whitewater rafting the Rio Manso in Chile. He’s also explored many of Iowa’s natural places by ski, foot, and paddle as well as 20+ canoe and ski trips to the BWCA. |
Larry Christy. Larry is the owner of Missour River Rafting, Outfitting and Canoe Rental in Saint Joseph Missouri. Besides canoeing most of the Missour he has also worked as a scenic river guide on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming and explores many smaller streams in the midwest each year. |
Dave Hillman. Dave is rumored to have 'gills' after 37 years participating in the paddlesport industry.He is an active flatwater kayaker, whitewater kayaker, canoeist, and finds the sport of SUP great fun. Dave has participated in dragonboating since 1988 as a member of the Cedar River Gang and is active in the American Dragonboat Association. He has paddled in the Midwest, Southeast, Colorado, California, Canada, Holland, and Costa Rica. Dave is also an active member of the Iowa Whitewater Coalition and is the Iowa Games Cano and Kayak event commissioner. |
Larry Hindes. Larry is an active kayaker and a skiing enthusiast. He’s a guide for the University of Iowa Outdoor Programs and teaches many of their paddling courses. He currently holds a kayak instructor certification with the American Canoe Association. |
Jeff Holmes. Jeff started CanoeSport Outfitters almost twenty years ago. He’s been the publisher of Canoeing Iowa Magazine and is currently an ACA Coastal Sea Kayak Instructor and BCU Coach Level 2. He’s solo kayaked the Everglades and circumnavigated the North Core Bank in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In addition, he’s kayaked the coast of Texas, Mississippi, Vancouver Island, and Georgia along with numerous trips on Lake Superior. He’s canoed the Boundary Waters and most rivers in Iowa and whitewater kayaked on the St. Louis River, Kettle River, Nahntahala River, and Green River in North Carolina. |
Casey Holmes. While working on the paddle side of the store for over 12 years, Casey has recently become CSO’s bike mechanic. Working on hundreds of bikes a year she has repaired many makes, models, and styles of bikes. She has gone on RAGBRAI for 3 years, has done a solo bike trip on the Katy Trail, and ridden around many central Iowa bike trails. |
Nate Hoogeveen. Nate paddled ,1800 Iowa river miles in 2003 – 2004 researching Paddling Iowa, and since has canoed and kayaked many additional river segments throughout the state. He has directed the Iowa Water Trails and River Programs since 2005. |
Jim Liechty. Jim lives in Winterset and is an avid river paddler who also loves to take the opportunity to fish many of the rivers in Iowa while exploring them in his canoe. Him has been the Director of the Madison County Conservation Board since 1979. |
Brian “Doc” Lange. Doctor Lange is a practicing Chiropractic physician in Knoxville. He’s been canoeing and kayaking for more than 25 years. His experiences include canoeing trips to the BWCA. His kayaking trips have taken him to Lake Superior, various lakes and waterway throughout Iowa, the Everglades, and the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest.ettle River, Nahntahala River, and Green River in North Carolina. |
Dan Jennings. Dan is an avid bicyclist and mechanic, having managed a bicycle shop in Omaha for many years. He’s the manufacturer representative for several quality companies including Thule car top systems and Scott Bicycles. He’s also a paddling enthusiast. |
Rosalyn Lehman. Rosalyn is the Executive Director for Iowa Rivers Revival (IRR) and field director for Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy (IWILL). Roz is native to Des Moines, having graduated from East High School and Drake University. She is helping to grow a statewide network of river supporters who are committed to the protection, restoration, and enhancement of Iowa’s rivers and streams. |
Torry Moore. Torry has been the manufacturer representative for We-no-nah Canoe and Current Designs Kayaks in the Midwest for nearly 15 years. He’s an experienced paddler and canoe racer. He also represents a variety of other outdoor products including Big Agnes. |
Steve Parrish. Steve is well-known among local paddlers, having served as the editor of the Central Iowa Paddlers newsletters. He has paddled in 18 states and 4 countries, including the Everglades, Isle Royale, the Apostle Islands, and Slate Islands. He’s also a frequent paddler of Lake Red Rock and Lake Rathbun. |
John Pearson. John is well-known among Iowa paddlers for participating in project AWARE, organizing history tours of forest and prairie preserves, and leading eco tours on Lake Red Rock for CanoeSport. He also recently started his own outdoor blog. John has paddled the Ozarks, the Okeefenokee Swamp, Isle Royale, Puget Sound, Yellowstone Lake, the Everglades, and the Texas Coast among many others. |
Flip Putthoff. Flip lives in Rogers, Arkansas where he canoes and kayaks on the Buffalo National River, Beaver Lake, and many other lakes and streams in the Ozarks. He has participated in 5 Great River Rumble trips, 3 of them in Iowa. He is also an avid cyclist and has completed RAGBRAI 4 times. He works as an outdoors reporter and photographer at Northwest Arkansas Media producing the outdoors section every week. |
Mark River. Mark has been passionate about the outdoors ever since childhood. He enjoys many outdoor activities including canoeing, fishing, backpacking,m ushrooming, bird watching, gardening, astronomy, and hunting. Mark has been the Carroll County Conservation Director since 2004. He enjoys working with the residents of Carroll County and surrounding counties to help protect our natural resources, enhance outdoor recreation opportunities, and improve our quality of life. |
Todd Robertson. Todd is an ACA Certified Canoe Instructor and the Outreach Coordinator for the River Programs at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He is an avid paddler and covers around 1,200 miles yearly on Iowa’s streams and lake via canoe, kayak, and Stand Up Board. |
Scott Sumpter. Scott is an avid cyclist from Ankeny who enoys riding anything on two wheels all year round. He created BIKEIOWA.com 12 years ago and has been trying to make Iowa a better place to bicycle ever since. |
Erik Thompson. Erik has been involved in paddlesports for more than 20 years. He’s been a manufacturer representative for Dagger, Necky, Hurricane, Aquabound, and many more. He’s currently working with Eddyline, Accent Paddles, and Stohlquist. |
Piper Wall. Piper is an American Canoe Association Certified Whitewater Kayaking Instructor. She also enjoys all other types of paddling, including sea kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up. She’s an active member of the Iowa Whitewater Coalition and is the instructor for their numerous whitewater workshops. She also plans and organizes many winter pool sessions at Iowa State University. She’s logged hundreds of miles on numerous whitewater rives across the country and paddled all the popular play spots across Iowa. |
