Everglades Eco Tour 2011 This year CanoeSport Outfitters offered the Eco Tour in the Everglades as a new option. Led by John Pearson and Shireen Cave, 6 customers toured the backwater of the Everglades before venturing out into the 10,000 Island area. Starting at the Turner River and paddling a little over 12 miles the group camped at Mormon's Place the first night in the rain. Waking up the next morning to heavy fog the group paddled about 10 miles to Watson's Place another ground site. Along the way many birds and alligators were spotted as well as a few fish and manatees. Paddling out the river channel, again through fog, the third night was spent on Pavillion. As the fog cleared in the evening the group enjoyed a spectacular sunset and campfire. Our fourth day was sunny and warm as we paddled past a shark, lots of fish, manatees, and more birds. We spend the night on Jewell Key, a new campsite to the area. John was an expert on naming birds and plants along the way and enlightening us with stories of the history of the area. Each day we were able to tour around our campsite identifying animals and plants, learning the difference between freshwater and saltwater ecosystems. We look forward to offering the Eco Tour in the future for those who want to experience the Everglades from the inside out!
